My twitter music rant ;-)
Here is my slightly-re-edited-twitter-rant take on musical content these days :-) A very sloppy and thrown together debut Tumblr post but it’ll have to do as I run out the door to go to Spidey:
Finally watching Lana Del Rey’s SNL performance - a singer singing without auto tune making awesome music…am I missing something? Love it - I think she sounds amazing…raw, tender and as a discerning musical listener I’m having trouble hearing any glaring pitch problems…perhaps moments of breathiness are being mistaken as out of tune by a public that can’t even tell the difference anymore? I believe pitch is only a problem if it hinders the listener’s ability to appreciate the intent and Lana’s performance only enhanced the melody and movement for me - similar to when a guitarist bends to a note rather than going to the next fret perhaps?…
I think it’s sad that our country will turn a blind eye/support/not know the difference between the TERRIBLE auto tuned junk on the radio and actual music and then jump on a bandwagon that hates on the real music that Lana is making. Our country needs a musical revolution…
I hope we can get away from the auditory pornography and find beauty in truthful music again - we have to stop supporting the garbage with $. Almost off my soapbox: not supporting garbage music with $ might mean not going to clubs/bars that play said music…can we boycott?…
To clarify, what rubs me the wrong way is music that is mainly meant to be played by DJ’s at loud clubs and spreads a message of lust, greed, covetousness, hate, and degradation. Most “hits” these days have at least one of these if not all…
The problem is, the message is wrapped up in an easy to sing along chorus so people/kids are singing these lies and subconsciously taking notice all while a few special artists sing songs that can uplift, encourage truthful love, and even help cope. If we decide to get drunk at places that support these terrible and isolating messages they’ll continue to find similar kinds of music to play and radio will continue to pump it out to remind us of our night before and to encourage us to do it again. Music is the marionette for advertisement these days - should be so much more…
The problem to me is how subtle the messages are these days - it’s not always blatantly degrading to women but it will praise an unhealthy codependent relationship (read: No Air (whose melody I love!) or Bad Romance (whose leading tone V6/vi to vi movement I love!) or continue to remind the masses that bottle service and more women = more pleasure/a better life. So unfortunate that we’ve come so far as a human race and still want to fall for the same traps - when I say we, I mean all of us including me! Just like pornography to sex, we have mass proliferated a side of music that lacks intimacy, reality and truth in place of a sensationalized fantasy that will never fulfill or bring peace.
And NOW I’m done! Apologies for clogging feeds - perhaps it’s time for Tumblr… ;-) Nothing but love for anyone disagreeing/agreeing :-)
